Divorce or dissolution, as it is called in the State of Washington, is the process of taking the marital household and dividing it into two households. Dissolutions may be split into cases with children and those without. In cases without children, the court will focus on splitting the property and debts that have been accumulated during the course of the marriage, and also consider whether a payment from one spouse to another (spousal maintenance), should apply for a period of time. Dissolutions with children deal with the above issues and also the court must determine where the children will reside and under what conditions (parenting plan) and the financial support that will be paid for the children (child support). Dissolutions range from fairly simple, inexpensive cases to hotly contested, complex cases involving substantial attorney cost.
